Transgenders excluded from Gay Rights NEW National Strategy for Equality

tAfter years fighting to legalize same-sex marriage, the leading gay rights groups in the United States including the Human Rights Campaign, announced they will lobby for a new campaign to expand “more” basic civil rights into conservative southern and western states within the next five years. Part of their mission will be workplace protections, the election of public officials, nondiscrimination ordinances in housing and employment and legislation allowing gay parents to adopt in states like Mississippi, Georgia, Arkansas and Texas.

Yet this agenda which they consider to be the “final frontier for gay rights” blatantly does not include transgender people. As a matter of fact, “transgender” is referenced only twice in this article and that is only because “transgender” completes the term LGBT. The article released yesterday in the politics section of the New York Times, specifically mentions this movement is for the “largely eluded millions of gay men and lesbians.”

So, there you have it. “The country’s leading gay rights groups and donors” in plain English, have publicized “Trans Lives Do Not Matter” in a major national newspaper. While gays and lesbians appear to be satisfied with the outcome of civil rights in northern and east coast states and are moving on, transgender people still lobby for the “basic civil rights.” Legislation such as the Gender Expression Non-Discrimination Act (GENDA) in LGBT tolerant states like New York, have yet to pass. If gays & lesbians consider themselves, “largely eluded” how should transgenders be considered? Humor me. Please.

It appeared trans people were trending in 2013.

There was the good –  Janet Mock, Carmen Carrera, Laverne Cox, Jennifer Pritzker, Chelsea Manning and achievements like ENDA, Violence against Women Act.

There was the bad –  Islan Nettles, Domonique Newborn, Cemia “CeCe” Dove, Eyricka Morgan, Evon Young,  Artegus Konyale Madden, Melony Smith, Diamond Williams and Amari Hill just to name a few.

It was a record year of trans “visibility”. Yet, once again, the gay and lesbian leaders are blind to trans equality and non-responsive to trans oppression by choice. If over the past ten years, the question from the trans community and their allies to the gay, lesbian and bisexual movement was, “what have you done for me lately?” it just took a turn for the worse.

Unyielding PRO-trans groups, leaders, trans people and CIS allies must unite in solidarity and demand serious DOCUMENTED Transgender inclusion in all movements going forward. That includes political protests. Fighting for Gay & Lesbian rights ONLY is discrimination against our trans sisters & brothers. Period!

What are we going to do about the TRANSGENDER EXCLUSION in the equality rights for EQUALITY??

The time is now.

It is past time for any and all groups to work for universal rights for all mankind.

  2. I haven’t herd about this. This is one of those times when hate mail is useful.
